About The Man Overboard Book

The Man Overboard
is the life of a Merchant Marine Officer who was able to survive a twenty year career
navigating supertankers. Darryl Hagar served as 2nd Mate which is the ships navigator from 1990-2005 and writes about his travels, exploits, adventures, troubles,  and the chaos of living as an active alcoholic and drug abuser through it all.
The Man Overboard is not a book blaming the industry, the companies worked for, the United States Coast Guard, the family, Maine Maritime Academy, nor is it sugar coated to protect any of the above. The Man Overboard uncovers the life of a Merchant Marine Officer who survived a twenty year career with severe alcoholism and drug addiction.  There are stories of
prostitution, his father’s suicide, multiple police arrests with drunk driving and car wrecks and medical procedures to repair the “Drunken Sailor’s” body.
In 2005 after flying across country in a drunken stupor to attend a company conference, Darryl finally surrendered to the demons chasing him. He was alone and emotionally spent, spiritually bankrupt, physically exhausted, and mentally broken. He begged for God to either save his life or end it.  The recovery process began and he started a new voyage. He prayed to God to take him through his journey of detoxification, sobriety and a 12 step program. He vowed to help others overcome the unforgiving and unwanted disease of alcoholism and all the atrocious things that go along with it.
